What is ATX Hackerspace?
We are a community of people who love to learn and make things, as well as a collaborative industrial workshop. We are located at 9701 Dessau Rd, Suite #304, Austin TX 78754.
We have 8000 square feet of space perfect for artists, designers, engineers, makers & hackers, fabbers, scientists, musicians, seminars and workshops, coworking, and a ton of other stuff. Anything that needs a space, involves loud equipment, messy equipment (woodworking, soldering/welding, painting), power equipment (120V, 240V, and 3-phase power available), or ventilation for fumes (etching, spray painting, varnish, etc).
More importantly, we have an established community that's growing. There are lots of different groups in Austin, and friends meeting at coffee shops, bars, and homes. If we combine skills, knowledge, ideas, tools, and materials, just imagine the massive projects that could be undertaken! Even if you're not into any of this, but want to learn, there will be some very smart and fun people around to help teach.
We're hackers (defined here) which means we create things and put them together in new and innovative ways. ATX Hackerspace is dedicated to promote and encourage technical, scientific, and artistic skills through projects, collaboration, and education by all legal means.
April 24, 2013 :: Revolutions in Scientific Literacy
Starting next Wednesday (4/24) at 7pm Zimmer Barnes will be hosting a new series of lecture nights focusing on Revolutions in Scientific Literacy. Each lecture will be followed by a viewing of a group selected themed movie.
See below for additional details. These events will have a suggested donation of $5 which includes a free drink from the hackerspace fridge. Let's make these events great!
Scientific literacy is vital to today's world, and doesn't have to be intimidating. Learn how we know what we know, and how it applies to modern science.
These lectures are taken from Ohio State University's Astrobiology course, and enhanced with Hackerspace-made slide shows. Once we get through the five exciting scientific revolutions, we'll explore other lectures about the hunt for alien life! This first lecture covers the Copernican Revolution.
If you'd like, bring a DVD of your favorite alien movie or TV show, fiction or non fiction! After the 45 minute lecture, we'll vote on what to screen and watch it. Everyone is encouraged but not required to bring snacks for yourself or to share.
